Your blood pressure result is determined based on your systolic and diastolic pressure.
- What is the systolic pressure? When the heart contracts, it pumps a lot of blood through the arteries. This increases the pressure on the vessel walls. This is called systolic pressure.
- What is the diastolic pressure? This reduces the pressure on the vessel walls and allows them to relax as well. This is called diastolic pressure.
What are the possible results of a blood pressure measurement?
Your blood pressure can be categorised following the guidelines of the European Society of Cardiology:
Category | Systolic value | Diastolic value |
Normal blood pressure | <124 | <79 |
Elevated blood pressure, but still within the normal range | 125-134 | 80-84 |
Category 1 high blood pressure (mild) | 135-154 | 85-94 |
Category 2 high blood pressure (moderate) | 155-174 | 95-104 |
Category 3 high blood pressure (severe) | >175 | >105 |
Important: we do not check for low blood pressure.
